Oh! The heat! *thud.*
It is so hot.

So. Hot.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to melt by tomorrow. Or spontaneously combust, one of the two.

Quick, tell me how your favorite characters stay cool in summer. In ficlet or blurb form, either way. Do it soon! Before I faint.

Hee, OK!

--

Angeal was sitting in his room in just a pair of boxer shorts, his fan going full blast. He also had a small, folding fan and was almost frantically fanning himself and cursing the fact that an electric company couldn't manage to keep their air conditioners working in the middle of summer.

He never would have guessed somewhere as far north as Midgar would be as unbearably hot in summer; it was only after he had moved there that he head learned about things like "humidity" and "urban heat island effects." Which meant summer in Midgar was bloody awful. Banora had been pretty cool, since it was close to the poles, and this Midgar heat was going to be the death of him.

There was a loud banging on his door.

"Come in, Zack," he said with a lopsided grin. The only one who would knock at his door that enthusiastically was that boy.

The door all but flew open and Zack flew in right along with it, and Angeal boggled. The kid was in full uniform and looked like he was all but glowing, bouncing around same as always. Everyone else in the entire building looked ready to wilt, but Zack looked more hyper than Angeal had seen him.

And Zack was staring at him. "...You hot or something?" the kid said, tilting his head like he was confused.

Angeal stared right back at him. "You're not?!"

Zack blinked. "Why would I be? This is like spring back home! I can't believe how there's no humidity here! This is nothing!"

Angeal stared more. The humidity was up to 50%, and Zack was saying there wasn't any? Angeal felt like he could barely breathe, and this was nothing.

He was never going to Gongaga. Never.

"Zack, you're letting the tiny bit of cool air there is out. Shut the door or leave," Angeal finally said, wiping at some sweat that was running uncomfortably down the back of his neck. He felt disgusting; wet and sticky from the sheen of sweat covering him.

Zack put his hands on his hips. "You need to hydrate," he finally said. "Drink lots and lots and lots of water. That's what we do back home all the time. That and hit the hotsprings in the forest."

Angeal felt something in his brain break. "In summer!?"

Zack grinned. "Ten minutes in one, and it sure feels cooler outside," he said, and suddenly Zack himself made a whole lot more sense.

Coming from a town that crazy, no wonder the kid was spastic.

"I'll stick with popsicles," Angeal finally said. "Once it's cool enough to move, that is," he said, and stared at his fridge longingly.

"Popsicles?" Zack said, perking up, and Angeal chuckled. If the boy had a tail, it'd be wagging, he figured.

"You can have one if you bring me one," Angeal said, fanning his neck quickly then slouching even more in his chair, and Zack bounced off for the kitchen.

Mmmm, popsicles. Angeal wins. (And Zack's brain has clearly fried. ;P)

And you know what's scary? I based Zack's "Get in a hot spring!" after the way crazy old Japanese people will go to hot springs in the middle of summer, during the hottest part of the day.

I'm from frickin' Georgia; I grew up with godawful heat and humidity, and I'm still like, "Y'all are crazy," and go for shaved ice.

*snrk* When I was on base in Misawa, the place to be was the library. It was one of the few buildings that had air conditioning and you didn't need clearance to get in.

Devil May Cry: Dante just gets naked. Not that he needs much encouragement...

I hear you, though. It's 5am, and it's already 80 degrees here in South Carolina.

Moogle does not approve! (Of the 80 degrees part, I mean. Dante can just get naked any time he wants.)

Dante likes you. ;-)

And I completely disapprove of 80 degree mornings, and 100+ degree days. I know I live in the south, but I have standards!

Dante has low standards. ;P

I'm not sure if northern Virginia counts as 'south' per se. But it is still Much Too Hot.

Well, I don't know whether it helps, but Nesa says she coped with the weather at her parents' farm in summer by either sitting inside with the fan on and a large jug of iced water in reach, or by going out to the orchard and sitting in the shade of one of the trees near the water trough for the chocobos. Of course, that was only until about mid-afternoon - then the sea breeze from the coast started to make its way inland, and cooled the place off beautifully. Plus, the heat there is dry heat, which means it's easier to cool down.

Midgar heat she copes with by shutting all the windows, turning on the air conditioning, and praying for rain. The rain doesn't do much - if anything it *raises* the ambient humidity - but she can kid herself the temperature's dropped a couple of degrees when it's finished raining. Oh, and the pitcher of iced water is a constant, as is a fan - either powered or manual.

There's all the standard stuff, too - light clothing, preferably natural fibres; sunblock and a hat if she has to go outside (she really gets attention in Midgar, wearing a hat, but she's not going to stop. One dose of mild sunstroke as a kid was quite enough, thank you very much. The hat stays); keep hydrated; stay indoors as much as possible during the hottest part of the day. Oh, and she tends to cook more of the Gongagan spicy stuff when it's summer - chilli becomes a big part of the menu.

Nessa is a smart cookie. The hat sounds like a good idea especially. I manage to get heat sickness every summer. ...She can keep the Gongagan spices though. I'm a wimp when it comes to spicy food.

"Of course, this is fairly mild," Hawk said brightly. "For the worst drought we've seen in ages, anyway."

Lise spared him a disbelieving glance, and turned back to Kevin. "You wave it in front of your face," she told him gently, and took the fan back for just a moment to show him. "Like this, see?"

Kevin nodded, and took the fan back carefully- he'd already put another set of holes in it the first time. He had the idea of fanning for the most part now, Lise noted, and looked at Hawk again. "I don't believe you," she said- she was no stranger to sweating, of course, but not from standing still, and in the shade at that.

Hawk gave her a lopsided shrug and smile. "Well, generally we worked at night," he said. "And the adrenaline and the running helped too, probably."

"I suppose we'll be getting a good deal of that ourselves," Lise said, eyeing the city exit.

Hawk grinned.
