Like wrestling a pig in mud, as the saying goes, except I don't think that's mud.
I'm kind of following my Twitter feed out of one squinted eye these days. For those of you not based in the US, this year is an election year, and it's exactly as ugly as you think. The Republicans haven't even picked a candidate to run against Obama yet and already we've had overt racism, classism, misogyny, religious zealotry - all the darkest parts of human nature that this whole 'civilization' thing is supposed to suppress, damn it - paraded across the stage along with the American flag with a big brass band playing 'God Bless America.'
Granted, none of this is exactly new. But it's extra-stinky this year. On my more optimistic* days, I like to call that "the screams of a dying dinosaur", because I think part of the reason the Hate Brigade is so vicious these days is because it knows it's on the way out. Young people aren't jumping up on board with them in the numbers they need to replace the ones that are dying off, and - as much as I hate the fact that I'm taking encouragement from this - they will die off. It's only a matter of time.
But in the meantime, they're hurting as many people as they can. So it's hard to stay optimistic. And while you could argue that it's my civic duty to Stay Informed about all this, I can't help but feel ready to hide under a rock until Voting Day. Because all the production, all the speechifying, all the mudslinging and horrible-human-being-ing? It's not going to make one blind bit of difference.
Seriously. This is a deeply angry, deeply divided country, and the vast majority of people have already decided which side they're on, and nothing anyone can say is going to change that. The Republicans could nominate a pimple on the ass of Rush Limbaugh and the party faithful would still vote for it, because they're not voting for the Republican candidate, they're voting against Obama. That's all it comes down to; that's all that matters. The guys frantically stumping along the country right now might as well go home and work on their memoirs until Election Day. The outcome won't be affected, and they won't be spending the next ten months wallowing in shit.
But as it is, extra-stinky verbal diarrhea's all we have to look forward to. God bless America.
