Not a good day to be a moogle.
So, I was made aware today that someone has apparently gotten ahold of my credit card and has been using it all month. There's over a thousand dollars of fraudulent charges. Fortunately, MyBank's fraud prevention department is quite on the ball. If all goes well, I shouldn't be liable for any of it, and I'll be getting my new card in a week. Ultimately it'll be nothing more than a brief scare and a minor inconvenience.
....Which is not to say I am not freaking out quite a lot right now. *pillow*
So, the last time I remember seeing my card was on my desk at home. And that was at least Oct. 16/17 because I bought gas on Oct. 16, right after I got back from NYCC. It disappeared from my sight sometime after that, but I'd assumed it'd just dropped on the floor somewhere and I'd find it when I needed it. HOWEVER, the vast majority of the fraudulent charges were at a Kohl's just a few blocks from where I live, so it's probable that the thief actually has physical possession of my card rather than just the card number. I have two theories so far as to how this could have happened.
FIRST: That, as per usual, I am very careless and forgetful and just left it somewhere, and someone picked it up and used it.
SECOND: After questioning my landlady about the whereabouts of the Other Housemate who vanished six weeks ago without a word to anyone and without taking his stuff with him (v. bizarre even by the standards of the housemates Landlady usually gets!), I was informed that he did indeed vanish before I left for NYCC, but that sometime after I returned she came home one day to find that one of the windows may have been forced. She suspects Other Housemate did it, but if so, he seems to have come in and left with none of his stuff and none of the valuables in either of our rooms - except, maybe, for my credit card. Landlady's negligence in failing to tell me about the window-forcing aside, this could explain how I lost my card when I don't remember putting it back in my purse or taking it out of my room.
It's not necessarily Other Housemate who forced the window, it could have been an unrelated random dude who... apparently only steals credit cards. Either way - aaaaagh. Notgood. *pillowpillowpillow*
Times like this, I wish I drank. I'll have to settle for going to bed. >_
