I can has canon?
FFVII fans, question: post-AC, how much does the General Populace know about That Thing With Meteor and Sephiroth's involvment therein? Because I mean Seph didn't exactly tend to leave witnesses, and Shinra placed the blame on Avalanche... but Our Heroes sure as hell wouldn't keep it a secret, and someone's probably asked why Shinra isn't mad at the tree-hugging hippy ecoterrorists anymore. Would it be reasonable to think that most people still think of Sephiroth as a war hero who disappeared under mysterious circumstances? Or have underground sources ferreted out the truth, or did Reeve make a press release...? I'm debating whether Rufus would find Seph a useful symbol, among other things.

Well, we all know how well Shin-Ra is about covering things up. But, according to some of the translations I've seen, the general public knew enough to call Cloud and the others the Heros of the Jenova war. That's from a translation of one of the new books being released.

So one would think that most of the people would think that, but, given how spread out and isolated some of the towns are, I can see some people still not knowing.

I mean, Shin-Ra replaced an entire town, and nobody noticed until Cloud and the others went back.

Very true. Heck, there's probably places where they think Shinra's still trucking along same as always.

I feel that considering the actions in AC and CD that while Cloud and crew get good press releases, Sephiroth's name doesn't come up except as That Guy Who Went Missing Way Back When.

OK, I re-wrote that sentence 5 times and it still is grammatically OUCH, but I hope you get my drift. :-p

You're drifting just fine. ^_^ And that sounds reasonable, yes.

The fact that most of Sephiroth's dramatically evil cameos and big scary fights happened in desperately back of beyond sort of places (like the Forgotten City, North Crater, Nibelheim, etc...) I think would have made it fairly doable for Shinra to glosss his involvement in the whole issue.

And I somehow get the impression that most of the known world has next to no idea what's going on anyway (I mean, Zack's parents didn't even get an MIA notice, nor did they seem to think it too weird that they hadn't heard from him in half a dozen years), so Shinra could probably tell them more or less whatever they liked and everyone would probably kind of shrug and carry on.

Although Seph didn't show up with the good guys to fight That Thing With Meteor despite being a war hero, so people might be suspicious/confused by his absence?

Damn, but the Planet needs a reliable news service. XD

Yes, but could they handle prime time?

Kadaj: And in other news, several charismatic, dashingly attractive dead men seem to have come to life recently. Familiar faces among those sighted include General Sephiroth, SOLDIER Zack Fair and that rather inconsequential trooper who fell off a bridge just outside Nibelheim nine or so years back. As I myself am also one of these born-again-men, I can promise you all that there is some truth to this rumor. More at eleven.

Yazoo: And now Loz with the weather.

lol. Perfect :)

Yazoo: Don't cry, Loz! *hurried look at camera* Um, let's go to big brother with the traffic shall we?

Cloud: I'm the only one out here! There IS no traffic! *sigh-y face* ...Back to you.

So is Yazoo sports or entertainment news?

Sports. His favorite is Motocross. ^_^

Sephiroth can do entertainment.

Or, alternatively, Yazoo can be entertainment (he has the suitably snazzy hair for it) and the Turks can do sports.

Reno: The Shinra SOLDIERs absolutely crushed the Wutai Warriors in this week's game, yo. So I hope none of you idiots were betting the other way.

Rude: ...go Shinra.
