Adventure Princess! Seriously my every fantasy since the age of eight.

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I kind of really want to write post-movie Tangled fic wherein Rapunzel is basically a cheerful friendly Batman.

Think about it: this girl can do everything. She's an artistic polymath, she can throw darts and swing a mean frying pan, she's comfortable with magic (raised by a witch, remember, even if she doesn't have the Magic Hair anymore) and could probably easily learn to do some of her own, she has contacts in the underworld and the resources of a princess. And she is largely self-taught! Which means she is HELLA SMART, you guys. There is no limit to what she can accomplish.

...Except perhaps for the emotional fallout from being raised by an emotional abuser, with the added punch of learning that she kidnapped you as a baby and was only using you for your hair. Which is interesting in a completely different direction, though I'm not sure I could do it justice. XD I mean, weepy damsel she is not, but there is no way she is not a little fucked in the head from all that.

...which, I suppose, lends itself to the Batman thing. XD

Re: the *shudder* new TMNT movie.

I'm almost fascinated by the whole thing, as one would be fascinated by a train coming into the station far too fast and already on fire. I mean, just so many poor decisions, one after the other, it's almost awe-inspiring. The Shredder being played by a white guy*, the mangled backstory, the (ohgod) faces. How can so much Wrong be packed into one project?

You know who I feel the most sorry for? Megan Fox. After her involvement with the Transformers franchise and the inglorious exit therefrom (and don't think that throwaway 'Yeah, she was a bitch' line in DotM didn't make me want to strangle Bay and Shia with each other's intestines), here she is in the middle of another geek property that's going horribly wrong. Which means she's about to get hit with a whole new generation of angry fanboys typing out their screeds accusing her of somehow ruining their childhood with one hand while jerking off to her picture with the other. The poor girl.

I sincerely hope that her next geek/scifi project is with a competent development team. And when we get a Power Rangers movie in a few years (you KNOW it's coming), she should definitely play Red.

*They're not even trying anymore, are they? They know everyone's expecting to see a Japanese guy in the role. They know they're going to get blowback for this. The only possible reason for this choice is 'we're racist, and we think you are too.' Fuck you too, guys.

I have so many feels about this movie, you guys. SO MANY. I may have to do a Why I Love Hot Rod post sometime. XD Also my appreciation for a very, very pretty Galvatron has been reestablished. >3

So MovieBob (this guy) just did his review of Battleship, and he tore it a new asshole. I felt... gratified. Does that make me a horrible person?

Let's back up. Remember Real Steel? Based on Rock'em Sock'em Robots, starred Hugh Jackman, I think? (Too lazy to look it up.) I... kind of cringed when I saw the trailers to that.* It didn't look like a bad movie - far from it. It looked good. It looked like it had heart, and that just killed me. How in the world could Rock'em Sock'em Robots, a property with no story behind "punch the other guy until someone's head flies off", get a decent movie and Transformers, with its wide character pool, rich mythos, and devoted fanbase, got... Bayverse?

I could seriously leap headfirst off a bridge, you guys.

Okay, look, Bayverse had moments I liked. There were even a few I loved. Mr. Cullen did an amazing job, Mikaela tended toward Badass in movie 1, etc. etc. it could have been AWESOME. And God knows we're getting some fantastic fanfic out of it. *waves at (lj)merfilly and (lj)chibirisuchan among others* But... in the end... yeah. Y'all know how that ended up.

For a while I thought that maybe part of the reason Bayformers failed was BECAUSE of its long history (anyone taking bets on when the first grand-sparkling will be born?), rich and varied continuity to draw from (which, let's face it, is a giant mess, and every attempt to 'Unify Canon' will inevitably result in this), and devoted fan base (read 'vocally obnoxious fan base with an entitlement complex'). Nobody with the intelligence of a waffle would want to touch this property, so we wound up with "T&A&Explosions" Bay, I thought. ...But then Joss Whedon directed Avengers, a property with comparable history, continuity wackiness, and fanbase. And it was very nearly a religious experience. So much for that theory.

So that's why I was relieved to hear that the other big budget movie based on a board game wasn't that great. (Although the newspaper gave it a decent review. FFFFF.)

JOSS. YOU MUST GET YOUR HANDS ON THE RIGHTS TO TRANSFORMERS AND REBOOT THAT SHIT. POKE HASBRO WITH LOKI'S POKEY STICK OF OBEY-ME AND GET IT DONE. ONLY YOU CAN SAVE US.

*I also kind of cringed because creating robots to entertain them in gladitorial combat was what the Quintessons did, before The Revolution came. So yeah, that's kind of a squick for this TF-S3 fangirl.

I had a Day Out with my mom yesterday - it's the first time in a while we've both had time for it. She really doesn't have a lot of time to do anything during the school year, and after school let out she and Dad went up to visit the grandparents for two weeks - ironically, they left the day after I came back from Botcon. So it felt like we hadn't seen each other in a while.

Highlights:
- going to a sushi-go-round for lunch. The last time I was at one of those was in Japan. The eel nigiri was amazing.
- Seeing Despicable Me. I enjoyed it quite a lot. Was funny and cute.
- There was a Lush store! *flailysquee* I got a bath bomb with lilhearts in it. ^_^
- On the way to the mall, Mom asked me to sing her a song, as she does sometimes. I sang "Still Alive." She thinks I am a psycho. ^_^

So that was nice.

Also, I am making progress on the Mythbusters/TFs crossover and the OC meme. Here's the ficlets for that so far:
Lacey the former Foot ninja and fire-jutsu user, TMNT 2K3 crossed over with Ghost Rider (LJ)
Pari, amnesiac half-Cybertronian, Transformers movieverse crossed over with an AU of The Ship Who Sang (IJ)
Sagewind, jackelope Maximal historian, Beast Wars (DW) (also with a bonus ficbit here because Dragovian encourages me shamelessly)*
Rena, chocobo jockey and caretaker, Final Fantasy 7 (DW)

*I need to have my revenge on her for that, because now I am bunnied to write Dinobot's adventures as the younger Maximals' combat instructor. Halp.

As fun as it is to bewail the oncoming Disney-fication of Marvel (oh come on, admit it, a Marvel world in Kingdom Hearts III would be adorable), I have to say I'm much more looking forward to a Marvel-fication of certain Disney properties. Think about it:

Years of abuse have made her tough as nails, and now she's finally had enough. With her deadly mop-fu and the birds and mice at her command, she's on a mission to uphold the honor of her late father and extract justice on those who prey on the powerless. Cinderella: she's going to clean up this town.

-or-

Following the betrayal of her father by the treacherous Jafar, Jasmine survives on the streets of Agrabah as an assassin for hire. Her acrobatic skill, faithful friend Rajah, and her family's scimitar serve her well, earning her some measure of fame in this whole new world. Yet her mortal enemy still hunts her, and Jasmine will need all the skill she possesses and all the friends she can find to retake her rightful throne!

...Don't even get me started on Belle. ;)

Saw Up with my mom last night. It was adorable and tearjerking and funny, which, y'know, Pixar. ;P ...After the movie we shared some ice cream and talked about how we needed to lose weight. Girl bonding, LOL. XD

I'm sort of playing with the seed of an idea of a duo of fics and/or drabble sets in the Pokemon world, Pokemon: Magic and Pokemon: Science. Science would focus on the network of Pokemon researchers and Pokedex trainers, and their quest to discover How It All Works. Magic would focus on the mythology surrounding the Legendaries, and how that translates to a near reverence for nature in general among humans and their relationships with Pokemon. ...Naturally, since there's a third game in each generation that comes out a little later, I'd have to come out with a third fic-set called, I don't know, Culture or some such.

...Dear god, someone please pry these games out of my hands. XD

So my mom comes home and goes "I got us tickets to Transformers! I am the best mom ever! :DDDD!" And she is, but then I had to tell her that I'm already going with some friends on Saturday. (She was too thrilled about me having friends to be disappointed, her lack of interest in giant robots notwithstanding.)

Also, given the speed at which I write, this is kind of comforting.

Mom took me Out today, apparently partly because I've been morose. Which - well, yeah. -_- Anyway, it was nice - got our hair cut and went to see Coraline. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit; Mom fell asleep during the second half. XD But she says she enjoyed what she saw of it, so that's all right. ...She asked me at one point if I wanted an Other Mother too. I told her I had enough trouble with the one I already had. She laughed.

Anyway, look! More Five Questions! These are from a [info]deepbluesquee.

Persepolis

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I had the day off today (apparently I'm still in limbo at work, schedule-wise), so I watched the movie Persepolis. It's a (mostly) black and white cartoon film, an autobiographical account of a girl growing up in Iran during the war and revolution.

I won't go into too much detail. I'm still sorting through my feelings about it, but I have to say it really affected me. Even though I can't really imagine or understand a lot of the things she lived through, I could identify with how she felt growing up. One thing's for sure, I feel a lot better about our government, despite our faults, but at the same time I feel even stronger about fighting for the things I'm passionate about.

I didn't really get any writing done today. How do you find words after hearing a story like that?

Proper update later, I promise.

It's just that I have a lot of pictures to upload, and my computer tends to make that process more of a pain in the ass than it needs to be. So I'm putting it off. -_-

In the meantime: SHINY. Hmm, costume refs to boot. Though looking at that I think I'm going to have to be verrrrry careful with my right hand, or make the cannon detachable. Otherwise I'm going to knock something over. XD ...Oh, take me, you sexy beast you.

EDIT: Because we were bored, 'Boots and I came up with a cast list for a live-action FF7. Here's the fruits of our labor, and I do mean fruits. )

God help me, but I'm really kind of looking forward to the DBZ movie.

(Rant inspired by this convo on [info]scans_daily. Contains spoilers and possible destruction-of-childhood.)

So here's the thing about DBZ. I grew up with it. I love the characters. I even have a fondness for the ugly designs and the awful plots (five episodes to span five minutes, wtf?). So I say this with nothing but love in my heart: this is one shark-jumpy series. I really think that with the exception of Videl and Vegeta's redemption, the entire Buu Saga could have been cut without losing much, and Cell only just missed being just as gratuitous thanks to Gohan's bit at the end (and Cell being a really good villain). I mean, a lot of the main characters have the power to destroy planets. They're practically gods. The only thing you can do is keep inventing more and more powerful bad guys for them to fight, and after a while it just gets ludicrous.

That, I think, is why I don't write DBZ fanfic anymore. Where do you go from there, honestly? You almost have to go the AU route.

The DBZ movie is not going to be faithful to the series. It's not Toriyama (no offense, Toriyama-sensei), it's not aimed at Japanese prepubescent boys, it will be completely different. And I think that's a good thing. Let's hit the reset button, mix things up a bit, and see what happens. Maybe it'll have some better storytelling. Maybe it'll even inspire me to get back on the fanfic mat. At the very least, I can hope for Chichi not being completely useless. (And on that point I am mad at you, Toriyama-sensei. Although I gotta respect Bulma for managing to be a main character in a martial-arts story even though she doesn't do martial arts.)

Which isn't to say it's not going to be gloriously awful. I'd almost be disappointed if it wasn't. ;P

That said! MEME TIEM! This one is from (lj)vani_nessa, the old 'comment to get a letter, then tell us about ten things you like starting with that letter' thing. I got T: Transformers, tea, and tango! )

- During in-class critique, concerning a video game interface I had designed:
Classmate: The buttons are very... touchable.
Me: *.....................*
Classmate: ...sorry.

- I got complimented on my shoes the other day. From a complete stranger. That always takes me by surprise.

- 'Nother dream: I had to rescue an old friend of mine from Alabama from a capricious faerie who'd turned her into a small fluffy dog, via faerie-style trickery/manners/wordplay. I had gotten in very close with the faerie, and was just running away with my dog-shaped friend when I woke up. *baps alarm with pillow*

- Saw Kung Fu Panda today. I include this in the 'strange and odd' category because it is a Jack Black movie, and everything Jack Black touches turns to WTF. Spoilers herein. )

- Lastly, I don't mean to bring anybody's hopes up since it's all still two weeks and a metric buttload of work away, but, um... I actually think I might graduate. I mean, I think I've started to let myself believe it. ...Okay, look, I wasn't going to do this graduation ceremony, right? My high school graduation was a complete load of horseshit. The highlight was when I stuck my tongue out at the camera right as Dad was taking a picture. But today someone from The Office called because I haven't gotten back to them about buying a cap and gown, and when Mom told me this I pictured it and pictured my name on the announcement and something... just snapped into focus for me, I guess. I've worked my ass off for this, I thought, why shouldn't I stand up there with everyone else? Why shouldn't I be proud? And that's when I started to believe. Despite myself, I started to believe.
